Warning over parcel mules scam targeting people in Northamptonshire

$
0
0

People in Northamptonshire have been warned about a reshipping scam known as ‘parcel mules’ which results in them handling stolen goods and losing out financially.

The warning comes from Northamptonshire Community Connect following advice from Action Fraud, part of the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau.

Victims are predominantly recruited through job advertisements and dating websites. They are persuaded to have items delivered to their addresses, and to pay for postage before sending the items elsewhere. Victims are contacted through freelancer websites and invited to become a “freight forwarder” as an employment opportunity. The work is advertised as processing packages and forwarding them to clients.

The items being delivered have been purchased through fraudulent means, including the use of stolen/fraudulently obtained cards. The items being delivered are often pieces of electrical equipment or high value goods such as trainers, perfume and the latest phones.

If you act as a “mule” you are not only handling stolen goods, but also losing out financially. You will not get paid the promised salary and you pay for the postage and delivery of the packages personally. Additionally, you will have provided enough of your personal details to allow identity theft to occur.

How To Protect Yourself:

* Do not agree to receive packages at your address for someone that you do not know and trust.

* Be cautious of unsolicited job offers or opportunities to make easy money.

* When accepting a job offer, verify the company details provided to you and check whether they have been registered in the UK.

* Be wary of someone that you have met only online who asks you to send money or to receive items. Protect your privacy and do not give your personal details to someone that you do not know and trust.

If you, or anyone you know, have been affected by this fraud or any other scam, report it to Action Fraud by calling 0300 123 2040 or visiting www.actionfraud.police.uk.

Five resign at Northamptonshire parish council labelled ‘dysfunctional’ by outgoing councillor

$

A village parish council in Northamptonshire is in turmoil after five people resigned in a fortnight and an outgoing member labelled it “dysfunctional”.

Last week it was reported three councillors on Spratton parish council, including the chairman and vice chairman, had handed in their notice for “personal reasons.”

This week it has emerged both the council’s recently employed clerk Gill Evans, and another member, Carol Bull have also tendered resignations.

And more has been revealed as to why two of the councillors left the authority, after their resignation letters were posted on the village noticeboard at the request of the clerk.

One of those written by Michael Heaton, who was previously chairman of the village’s neighbourhood plan steering group, wrote: “The council has become increasingly dysfunctional. While I had remained able to withstand the personal pressure from outside the council, recent in-fighting has sapped my will to continue.”

The noticeboard also featured the resignation letter of the parish council’s now former chairman Lynne Hogg, who wrote: “Due to external and internal issues that have encountered since being co-opted on the parish council, I cannot see a united way forward.”

Daventry District Council was informed councillors Lynn Hogg, Michael Heaton and Fiona Keable had resigned from Spratton Parish Council on Thursday, August 27.

Members of Spratton Parish Council were contacted for a response to the resignations and the accusation the small authority was “dysfunctional.”

Councillor John Hunt said that the council had recently come under a lot of external pressure which had prompted some to hand in their notices.

He said; “What I will say is this is one of the best parish councils around. It’s done some excellent things; we create a new wood, a new pocket park. I could go on.”

“Everybody on this council has either resigned because of very much unfounded allegations going around by a very small minority. Frankly we are fed up of it.”

The September parish council meeting has been cancelled as a result of the resignations and the authority is not due to meet again until Tuesday, October 20.

A Daventry District Council spokesman said the parish council is set to hold elections to replace the councillors who have left.

‘Sock it to me’ Northamptonshire star who married Burt Reynolds dies aged 76

A Northamptonshire born star of a hit US comedy who became famous for her “sock it to me” catchphrase and who married Burt Reynolds has died aged 76.

Judy Carne, born as Joyce Botterill in 1939, was the daughter of Kingsthorpe greengrocers and went on to find fame in America in the 1960s as a dancer, actress and comedienne.

She made her first British television appearances on the series Danger Man in 1961, but after moving to the US appeared in several movies and TV shows, such as The Man From UNCLE and I Dream of Jeannie,

She was best known for her performance in the NBC sketch show Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-in, in which the Northampton born star coined the catchphrase “sock it to me,” often accompanied by her being doused in water by her co-stars.

Sadly she died at Northampton General Hospital died on Thursday, September 3, after a battle with pneumonia. She was believed to have lived in Pitsford at the time.

Tributes have flooded in for the Northampton star via Facebook page Northampton Old Faces.

Patricia Keay, who went to school with her, wrote: “Judy Carne, or Joyce Botterill as she was known then, was two or three years ahead of me at Bective Junior School in the late 1940’s. Miss Oaks, our Headmistress, was very proud of her talented pupil, and very often the whole school would be gathered into the hall, where Joyce would give an impromptu ‘song and dance’ performance. Rest peacefully, Judy.”

After leaving Laugh-in, Judy Carne starred as Polly in The Boyfriend on Broadway and appeared on numerous game and talk shows in the US.

In 1963 she entered into a tempestuous two year marriage with film actor Burt Reynolds, who she would later allege in a 1980s biography, had been abusive to her during their relationship.

The book ‘Laughing on the Outside, Crying on the Inside: The Bittersweet Saga of the Sock-It-To-Me Girl’s also revealed her descent into a life of drug addiction.

Her and Burt Reynolds divorced in 1966.

In the late 1970s Carne was involved in a near fatal car accident, from which she broke her back, and in 1978 returned from America to her parents’ home in Church Brampton, to recover.

Judy Carne first trained in Northampton at the Pit-Draffen Academy of Dancing and was described by Denise Pitt-Draffen in 2002 as “a very talented girl.”

Now, a new three-year deal will see Sky AdSmart, which tailors what is shown in TV ad breaks according to a household’s location and profile, roll out across Johnston Press’ extensive footprint – which stretches from northern Scotland to the south coast of England.

The new agreement will see Johnston Press’ advertising sales teams work with the Sky AdSmart team to deliver powerful television advertising campaigns and help small and medium-sized businesses compete effectively with national brands.

More than 500 advertisers have used Sky AdSmart since its launch in January 2014, delivering more than 2,000 campaigns. The majority are either new to Sky, or to TV advertising. The number of attributes available has doubled since launch, with postcode targeting now available to the first two letters.

Ashley Highfield, CEO, Johnston Press, said: “That Sky has cemented this partnership by agreeing to a new three-year deal is testament to the strength of the relationships we have with small and medium-sized businesses across our regions and the powerful product Sky AdSmart is.

“Being able to now offer customers across our portfolio the chance to advertise on television to a local, relevant Sky audience is a hugely attractive proposition and further enhances our attractive multimedia advertising offering.”

Jamie West, Deputy MD, Sky Media added: “Sky AdSmart has been a phenomenal success since its launch with hundreds of local businesses benefiting from the unrivalled power of TV advertising. Together with Johnston Press we’re pleased to be able to open up this opportunity to more and more small and medium-sized businesses.”

Union says links to police will ‘damage reputation of fire service’, as police commissioner’s powers set to increase in Northamptonshire

Proposals that would see Northamptonshire’s police commissioner in charge of the county’s firefighters will damage the reputation of the fire service, a union says.

Prime Minister David Cameron said today Police & Crime Commissioners (PCCs) will be in ultimate control of fire and rescue services across the country.

But the FBU called the move undemocratic - alluding to the fact the commissioners were voted in based on suitability for managing local police forces - and said the move will result in “chaos” for emergency services, which have experienced sizeable cuts recently.

FBU general secretary Matt Wrack said: “Police are law enforcers, while fire and rescue is a humanitarian service with a very different remit and culture. Firefighters need to be seen to be neutral within the communities they serve.

“Links with law enforcers will damage the much needed trust and reputation firefighters have built up in neighbourhoods over decades, trust they depend on to gain access to peoples’ homes when needed for fire prevention and rescue work.

“Fire and rescue services need independence to do their job professionally. We will challenge these proposals and appeal to local politicians to do the same.”

In 2013, Northamptonshire fire and rescue service’s senior management team moved into Wootton Hall Park.

Shortly afterwards, the county’s first co-located police and fire station opened in Thrapston.

Adam Simmonds, Northamptonshire Police and Crime Commissioner, said he welcomed today’s news.

He said: “My ambition in bringing the two services together was to provide a better standard of service to the communities both these organisations serve.

“That is the role of a PCC, to get better value for money and bring partners together where it makes sense to do so and we have demonstrated the value in further developing arrangements like these, between the emergency services.

“At present, legislation prevents this from happening and I welcome the Government consulting on proposals that will allow PCCs to have more control of the emergency services in their locality in the future.”

Adrian Davis, interim head of service for Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “We have demonstrated that we can adapt to changing demand amongst the emergency services. We have done a great job in managing down demand for our service over the last decade and we now work more closely than ever with both the police and East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS).”

“It is encouraging that the Government is taking steps that will give clear leadership and clarity that help to support the arrangements that we have been pursuing locally.”

Brackley man jailed after he threatened ex-partner with imitation gun

A man who threatened his ex-partner with an imitation gun after she confronted him over his drug use has been given an 18-month jail sentence.

Michael Borrer, aged 24, of Hinton-on-the-Hedges, went round to his ex-partner’s house in Brackley on September 1 last year with a bag containing more than £5,000 worth of mephedrone, a class B drug.

Northampton Crown Court heard Borrer’s ex-partner thought he “smelt strongly of cat urine”, which is a sign he may be a mephedrone user.

Rachel Law, prosecuting, said Borrer asked if he could sleep on the sofa for the night and then went upstairs to have a shower.

When he came back downstairs he noticed his ex-partner had put his clothes in the wash and then picked a gun out of his bag and pointed it towards her face.

Borrer then left the property and was arrested by police after they were called by the ex-partner.

Police recovered three plastic tubs of mephedrone with an estimated street value of £5,650.

Judge Fowler sentenced Borrer to 18 months in prison for possession of the gun, which was an imitation Walter PPK not capable of firing, and 12 months, to be served concurrently, for possession of the drugs.

Two burglars who raided mobile phone shop in Weedon jailed for two years

Two burglars who stole thousands of pounds worth of computer and mobile phone equipment from a shop in Weedon have been jailed for two years.

Kane Morbey and Adrian Snape, both aged 31, carried out a raid of Everything Apple Ltd in the early hours of the morning.

Northampton Crown Court heard the pair stole dozens of iPhones, cases and laptops from the store on September 12 last year.

Jenna Allen, prosecuting, said the owner of the store chased Morbey after he was alerted by the store alarm and drove down to investigate.

Mrs Allen said: “The owner arrived at the store to find the window was smashed and saw a man running away with a bag.

“The man then got into a car that was parked up.

“The owner then ran back to his vehicle and chased the car.”

Mrs Allen said the car accelerated up the A5 towards Hinckley but the owner managed to get the car’s details and passed them on to police.

Morbey and Snape were arrested a couple of hours later and a number of stolen items, including 1,500 iPhone cases, were found in their vehicle.

The owner estimated that he had suffered a loss of £4,500 including the repair needed to his shop window.

Snape and Morbey both pleaded guilty to burglary.

Morbey was also found to have committed a burglary of a shop in Wolverhampton in July.

The court heard three men carried out an untidy search of the shop before running off towards a BMW.

The men were confronted by a police officer and Morbey then threatened him with a crow bar.

Judge Michael Fowler described Morbey, of Birmingham, as a “professional burglar” and sentenced him to two-and-a-half years in jail.

He sentenced Snape, of Camelot Way, Birmingham, to two years in jail.
