A TEAM of volunteers have adopted an area of the Grand Union Canal.

The Braunston Canal Society are a local group whose aim is to work on the canal and surrounding environment to bring people and the canal closer.

After a year of hard work the group approached the Canal and Rivers Trust Charity about adopting a stretch of canal from the Braunston tunnel portal through to the twin bridges at Braunston Junction.

CRT granted the adoption and there will be an official presentation to the group at The Admiral Nelson/Lock 3 on Friday, January 18 at 11.30am.

BCS founder Member Chris Burton said: “Our sole purpose was to get on with the work that we as members and the public identified as requiring attention.

“And to help to show people what a major asset they had on their doorsteps.”

Since the beginning of the year the society have given CRT over 400 volunteer hours spread over approximately 20 different work parties. They have prepared and re-painted three of the six locks on the Braunston flight and commenced a overhaul of the gardens around the Braunston stop house.

Cllr for Braunston and Welton, Abigial Campbell, said: “I think adoption will provide an opportunity for local people to engage more with the canal, and feel proud of Braunston’s location at the heart of the waterways.”
