Budding engineers from the Parker Academy in Daventry have chalked up their first trophy in their first race of the 2016 season.

The team of young men and women have been part of the project team to build and race a F24 racing car, donated by Daventry business partner Cummins Engines.

For six months, the team of students working with engineers to refine and perfect the car kit within very strict scrutineering guidelines.

Lead engineer Ankush Puri said: “The student team worked hard and sometimes long hours to build the F24 Car and actually managed to participate in the Race Season opener.

“It was a big achievement for the team and school as a whole to show their presence at such level for the first time.”

The school team even bagged the Best Presented Team Award for Season opener 2016.

Student engineer, Luke McMurtry, said: “It all started back at the end of September when a team of engineers from Cummins Engines invited our school to enter a team into the Greenpower Educational Trust events around the country. We started with some lessons about aerodynamics and how electric vehicles work.

“After the school got together a dream team of car (experts), we built a Greenpower car kit to get us started as our school had never embarked on something like this before.

“We first built the car and then went back to the drawing board to discuss some basic aerodynamics and some possible materials that are lightweight and strong and also take some impact as some of the drivers could crash into us.”
