The cost of repairing a wooden bridge at Daventry Country Park that has been badly damaged in an arson attack is likely to be “considerable”, a councillor said

Firefighters were called to the park at 5.30am to deal with a golf buggy on fire on the bridge, which crosses a stream at the southern end of the circular reservoir.

The bridge has been sealed off to the public as the middle of the structure has been badly damaged by the fire.

Councillor Alan Hills, Daventry District Council’s community, culture and leisure portfolio holder, said it was a “mindless act of destruction at the country park.”

He said: “Not only has it spoiled the circular reservoir walk for visitors, but the cost of repairing the bridge is likely to be considerable.

“We hope whoever did this will realise the effect that such senseless actions can have on the wider community and we would urge anyone with information about this incident to contact Northamptonshire Police on 101, or speak to Crimestoppers on 0800 555111. The quicker whoever did this are brought to justice the better”

A Northamptonshire Police spokesman said officers were investigating the theft of a golf buggy from a nearby golf course.

Daventry District Council will contact organisers of events scheduled to use the circular path in the coming weeks to arrange alternative routes. Anyone with any questions can contact the council on 01327 871100.
