Generous Daventry district residents and businesses have been thanked for their incredible support for a Christmas hampers campaign to help people in need over the festive period.
Daventry District Council (DDC) teamed up with the Daventry and District Over Fifties Forum (DOF), Daventry Food Bank, Danetre Rotary Club, Daventry & District Housing and Cummins on the Christmas Helping Hampers project.
Kind-hearted residents, organisations and businesses contributed more than 2,000 items, creating more than 70 hampers delivered to Daventry Food Bank to people in need across Daventry District. The hampers, which contain a range of goodies to help make Christmas special, will go to local people who have been referred to Daventry Food Bank by various agencies due to their financial circumstances.
Cllr Deanna Eddon, treasurer and committee member of DOF which organised the campaign, said: “We managed 42 hampers last year and our target for this year was 60, so to beat that target is really very pleasing.
“We have been overwhelmed by people’s generosity and I would like to thank everyone who has supported the campaign to make Christmas that little bit more special for people in need.”
DDCs community, culture and leisure portfolio holder Cllr Alan Hills said: “These hampers make a real difference to the people that receive them and we would like to thank all the partner organisations, businesses and individuals that supported the effort.
“It’s testament to the community spirit in Daventry District that people can pull together and respond so tremendously to a campaign such as this. It proves that Daventry may be small, but it has a big heart.”
