A man has died in a road traffic collison between a lorry and car on the M1 this morning.
The man was driving the car when the collision took place at about 4.15am on the northbound carriageway between junctions 16 and 17.
The Highways Agency says the northbound M1 between Junctions 16 and 17 east of Northampton are closed due to the accident. Emergency services are in attendance and the incident is being led by Northamptonshire Police.
It is currently estimated the northbound carriageway will remain closed until 10.45am. Drivers are advised to allow extra time for their journey.
A diversion is in place with drivers advised to exit the M1 northbound at Jct 16a and use the A45 westbound, turning right to the A5 at Weedon crossroads. They should continue on the A5 to the A5/A428 Crick roundabout and take the third exit to the A428, continuing on this road to then rejoin the M1 at Junction 18.
Additionally, there have been a number of secondary incidents on the southbound carriageway in the same section. Southbound traffic is currently experiencing delays of up to 30 minutes.
