A POLICE constable (PC) and a police community support officer (PCSO) in Daventry have been judged to be the best in the county.

PC Rhiryd Hughes, 51, commonly known in the town as Wyn, and PCSO Nicky Black, 27, have won PC and PCSO of the Year respectively.

Both officers, who are from the Daventry Safer Community Team, were given their awards for the outstanding commitment they have shown to the force.

They have both played a key role in helping to tackle the town’s antisocial behaviour problems.

PCSO Black, who has been with the force since 2000, was praised for being an ‘oracle of local information’ while PC Hughes, who has been with the police since 2005, was praised for saving the lives of two people in a nightclub by rescusitating them. He was also recognised for his reintroduction of bikes for policing in the town .

PC Hughes, who is married with two children, said: “I was very pleased to have got this award, it is lovely to be recognised by the team. It is also good to be rewarded for making a difference to people’s lives.”

PCSO Black added: “I was completely stunned to have got this award. It is a great job and I love to help people.

“The award for Wyn is definitely deserved as he has made a lot of arrests on the bike and he can get there very quickly. It is particularly useful having the bike in Daventry because of the way the estates are. He knows all of the shortcuts and alleyways.”

They were full of praise for Sergeant Sam Dobbs who nominated them for the award.

PCSO Black said: “He is the first one to support members of his team and leads by example.”

PC Hughes added: “He really supports us all and I think Daventry is very lucky to have someone like him in charge.”

They will be presented with their awards at a ceremony later in the year.
