Coroner rules on death of an infant

A coroner has ruled the death of a four-month-old toddler from Daventry was from natural causes, an inquest has heard

At the inquest held on Wednesday, Dr David O’Neill, a consultant paediatric pathologist at Nottingham University Hospital, who carried out the post mortem, recorded the cause of death as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and a viral respiratory tract infection.

In a report written by Dr O’Neill read out by senior coroner for Northampton, Anne Pember stated there was no significant abnormalities present at the time of the toddler’s death.

A paramedic who attended after 999 was called, told the inquest there was no injuries when she arrived at the scene.

Elise’s mother Anna attended the inquest but her statement was also read out by Mrs Pember.

The statement said that on the morning of Elise’s death, she had fallen asleep at around 6am after a restless night’s sleep.

She said: “I was woken up by my mobile phone at 10.50am. I then went to wake Elise up but found her in the same position as I had left her and unresponsive. It was at this stage that I knew something was wrong.

“I called 999, and my partner Scott performed CPR with guidance from the operator. She was then transferred to the hospital where she sadly died.”

Mrs Pember said: “We have heard from Dr O’Neill who is a very experienced consultant in the area of paediatric pathologist. He gives the cause of death as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

“My conclusion is that Elise Neveah Lamb died from natural causes.

“I am so very sorry for your loss.”
